In continuation of Sunny’s definition of a Desi in one of his recent posts I would like to add these. Here are 10 facts about a Desi you had better know!

  • Desis come from populous countries with India, of course, taking the lead. The major Desi countries India, Pakistan and Bangladesh plus Sri Lanka, Nepal & Bhutan account for a population of 1.5 billion. That’s around 23% of the current world population of 6.6 billion people. Desis are a force to reckon with!
  • Desis come from rather economically poor countries. This is fast changing but has still a long way to go. Compared to America and Europe, Desi countries have a lot to achieve in terms of economic development and political stability.
  • The first priority of an average Desi is “family”. A westerner might perceive this as extreme. “Freedom” is the byword for an American or a European - But generally for a Desi, family comes first – Desis are family birds!
  • Desis have a different view of “Sex”. Generally it exists within the confines of marriage only. They are a lot more conservative than a first world citizen in this regard.
  • Most Desis know (or at least understand) the language of “Hindi” – India’s national language. And Desis love Bollywood, the Hindi Cinema equivalent of Hollywood Cinema.
  • Most Desis aspire to work outside their home countries to make their fortune quickly and to distinguish themselves from the crowd. This may not be true in the years to come due to aggressive industrial development in these countries. Reverse brain drain has already started in countries like India.
  • You can make out a Desi anywhere in the world by the heavy stress on the syllable “R”. Ask a Desi to pronounce the words “Tear”, “Clearly”, “Cry”, “Price” and you will know what I mean.
  • Desis are better at numbers than westerners. This is true at least of Indians who generally have better quantitative skills than the whites.
  • Desis do well in foreign lands – What I mean is a Desi usually succeeds better in a foreign land than in his home country. His best comes out when he works overseas.
  • Finally most Desis are like me – “They are Just Nice People!”

What more can you think of a Desi that is unique about them?
