George Hotz, a 17 year old hacker has broken the tag that ties Apples’ iPhone with only AT&T wireless network. This means that the most hyped cell phone can be used by other networks, including overseas ones. Hotz of New Jersey confirmed that he had unlocked an iPhone and was using it on T-Mobile’s network. He shows off on his blog a video of an iPhone that displays T-Mobile as the carrier. The unlock process is no doubt complicated as he himself admits. It requires soldering and software tweak to be performed and takes about 2 hours to unlock an iPhone. George auctioned off the very first unlocked iPhone on eBay in a historic auction. AT&T and Apple have not commented.

Hotz has posted the hack on his personal blog here. His blog has already become popular with dozens of comments.

I am pretty sure that very soon simple software will be available to unlock the iPhone. And I wouldn’t be surprised to see unlocked Apple iPhones here in UAE selling at a premium making them compatible with the local telecommunications carriers. Hotz no doubt has risked himself making this knowledge public.
