Ads Don’t Help
Majority of the blogsphere has Google AdSense ads embedded to their blogs. By having these ads everywhere on your site, especially with the main content we give our readers the opportunity to leave. It just doesn’t stop with Google ads, it really has to do with all types of ads, but Google’s ads are the most common way bloggers allow their users to leave.
Don’t link out too much. Let’s say if I wanted to link to Google.com and I don’t want my readers to leave; therefore, I would give the address out but I didn’t place the hyperlink on it. Readers are less likely to go to whatever address you gave them if you don’t link out. Instead, just write out the address like Google.com. I already showed the address of the external link and most readers will not take the effort to copy and paste the address to check out the external site unless they were very interested in it.
For example, if you were in a room with 20 doors all around the room, then you will most likely walk out through one of those doors. However, the chances of you walking out from the room will decrease if you had only one door.

When writing a post about an article or referring to another site, just link out one time to that source. If you link out more than once to that site then it’ll be a hint to your readers to actually go there instead of staying at your site. I did a case study a while back and I learned that it’s better to have three or less different external links within one post.
Also, when it comes to links on other areas of your site make sure majority of your links are internal, as in they point to pages within your site.
Link Smart
When trying to keep readers within your site, work on keeping your external links to no more than five in a page. I’m not saying to not to link out at all, because by not doing so it’s also bad for your site. You want a trail for the search engine bots to follow such as connecting different sites in the same area when it comes to topics and keywords. If you’re going to link out then make sure wherever you link to, relates to the content of your site.
So, do you guys agree or not?

I like these strategies. They really are some techniques I haven’t thought of. You DO want to keep people on your site, and what you wrote makes complete sense.

What about using the link with a target=”_blank” so it opens a new window? I agree with your last statement about using links. If you see value in another site you need to give them a link but make sure you are in the background!

Lewis, another good tip. I actually use that as well, because you want to keep the readers on your page somehow. These days it’s not so bad because most browsers have ‘tabs,’ so often it just opens up a new one.

I agree with Desi. At the same time, I’m applying what Lewis is saying: Make the link open in a new window. That will at least keep our blog in the readers tab. Ain’t it?

Actually, opening the links in a new window is bad manners. If I want to leave the site, I want to do just that. Not opening a new window. Visual impaired people click on a link and then go “wtf happened?”. They want to go back to the original site and click ‘back’ to no avail. It’s also against web standards. If I want to open the external link AND stay on the site I’m on currently, I can choose to open in a new window or preferably in a new tab. It really annoys me when other people think they have to decide for me that I wanted a new window opened. They’ve taken away my choice.
Don’t get me wrong. I do understand why webmaster want to use the target-blank option, but please let people decide for themselves. I don’t do it on any of my sites.

I agree with Desi. When I surf the internet, a website with too many links is a turn-off, and it seems like the webmaster is telling me to go somewhere else.

Good post.
5 incoming links – 4 outgoing links = 1 backlink
Therefore, always try to reduce the number of outgoing links.

Yup you are right! I am one who has so many links out… Probably I have to do something about it… Thanks!
Tips like these help me step by step as I do my site…

But come to think of it… I think it has to do with the site’s theme too. I have a site on reviewing Internet business… And I am giving all the links to the different tools to do their business… They are placed on the left sidebar of my site.. Some of the links are a little long to copy and paste there… Hmm..

I disagree. I’m constantly looking for other information. If I see something in a post that I’m interested it, I’ll open it in another tab and continue reading what I’m looking at, then go back and see what I found.
Likewise, I usually share links to interesting articles on a weekly basis. I try to create posts that I would like to read, and I love when I get the opportunity to find new blogs thru other’s links.

@cooliojones: yeah if you think about it step by step, it makes sense after a while
@zool: yeah i beleive adsense is the biggest reducer of traffic
@Lewis: yeah ur right, but keep your links small
@Zaki: don’t open a new window, it lowers the user experience
@eric: i totally agree!
@Michael: yeah i know, having too many links is a msg to the reader to go away
@David: i dont agree with that formula
@Charles: yeah you should reduce thoswe number of links
@Shawn: i think it’s better to have the option of whether you want it to be opened or not

Shawn, I think you have a point there… But I think it’s more towards who are the ones using the web browser.. whether they have such habit or not… Some friends i know only want to focus one site at a time.. they just click from one place to another… They are really surfing!
We have to balance up between the two.. no matter what we do still link to great sites out there!

From what everyone has posted, if you have your own blog, it might be worth asking your readers so you know their preferences, then tailor your site to that. It’s another way of showing you care!

Nice advice. I always link to more than 5 blogger every post. I think I should take your advice and begin to link to myself!

With every post, you link to 5 bloggers? Wow! That’s amazing! I’m sure they love you for it too!

If the article is short then you can do wth max 2 links and if it is long upto 4 links OK.

Ajay is right, stick with only 2 for short posts and 4 for long posts.

I usually only link to the source once too and I always try to find ways to incorporate links to other parts of my blog in my articles.

Basicly I agree with these tips. And what I almost always do when make a link is – I target it to open in new page, so readers are not actually leaving my blog. They can read that new link (page), close and then they are back in by blog
