I know that many of you bloggers out there are targeting niche markets in the blogsphere and in the rest of the internet. Certain topics such as cars and technology are very hard to compete in. I looked through several other blogs that talk about targeting niche markets and after reading it just degrades the motivation to blog. I can understand why some bloggers give up because they get the feeling that they can never reach a high level of online success.

Targeting a certain niche can narrow down a blog too much in topics, and in doing so can also limit what the blog can talk about. However, there is a solution, we can take a blog and focus on a topic.

What is the difference between niche and focus? Aren’t they the same?
To an extent they are referred to be the same things, but if you look at the definitions then it’ll show that they’re not the same. A niche is a certain place in a market, a position in the market. Focus, as in with blogging, is a concentration and clarity of distinctness towards a certain topic.

Let’s look at this blog, DesiNotes.com, for example. As you can see I’m not targeting any niche markets. The niche markets are already taken and I would have to spend thousands of dollars to take over those niche markets. However, I’m getting loads of returning traffic from my paid marketing and it’s due to one thing, focusing on blogging.

Let’s look at the image below. As you can see with this diagram, this blog’s focus circles around the blogging topic and related topics.

So, if you’re trying to get a good position in a niche market, dump it. Focus your writing on a certain topic and other topics related to it. By doing so you will improve the quality of your post by staying on topic.

After reading this, what would you prefer, targeting a niche market or focusing on a topic?
