In high school I used to be in JROTC (Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps), of the Army branch. JRTOC is a military program to give high schoolers a way to experince military training and help them be better people. The whole goal of the program is to “motivate young people to become better citizens”; the quote, the JROTC motto, speaks for itself and it’s true. It taught me alot and prepared me to be a better person in college.

While I was in the program it helped me in public presentations and conduct myself in a formal matter in appropriate times, which got me along way. I now know how to dress and what do and what not to do while giving a speech, and how to behave with elders in formal gathrings, etc.

These are few things that I learned while I was in the Corps.

    1) In a formal party, if you want to introduce two people, you bring the younger one to the older one and introduce them.
    2) When shaking a gentleman’s hand, you firmly yet gently shake and at the same time you look at that gentleman in the eyes, showing respect; it doesn’t have to be in a formal party it can be anywhere.

The main thing they taught me well as how to present a speech well for any group of audiences. Some of their tips are as follows:

  • 1) Rehearse the speech well enough to almost memorize it and present it smoothly.
  • 2) Dress in a fashion for the appropriate time. For example, wear a suit in a formal presentation.
  • 3) Have notes about the speech on index cards so you won’t have to carry around papers as you go up to present it. It’s easy to carry index cards in your pant pockets; for ladies, in their purse.
  • 4) Make sure you don’t read from your index cards or papers and actually “present” it. Make sure you make eye contact with your audiences time after time and only look on your index cards for quick reminders. Making eye contact with your audiences is one of the most important things you can do to give a great speech.
  • 5) Drink a little water before giving the speech so your voice will project well.
  • So , if you take classes or have a job that requires you to give public speeches then implement my simple tips.
