When I’m working on the computer I have numerous windows opened at one time and I don’t need anymore windows opened without my permission. Internet Explorer 7 and Mozilla Firefox has the tab system built in so, the user will open the new window from the right-click option if he or she wishes.
I remember when I first started out blogging, I placed the target=”_blank” code in all of the hyperlinks that lead to an external site. The reason I did that was to keep the window of my site open. After a while I learned that by not giving the user the option of choosing to open the same window or opening a new window, lowers the positive user experience. I learned that the more options you give to your readers, the better you and your site will be looked upon on by them.
Don’t Open New Windows
As you probably figured out by now, I’m not for opening new windows. By doing so it’s disrespectful to the user. If the user wants to open a new window then he or she will, but for the most part open external links to the same window.
Letting the user open the new window by his or her wish will deviate them from the loyal readers and the average surfer. If a person likes your site then he or she will come back to it. But if that person doesn’t like your site then he or she won’t come back to it and there’s no point of keeping that person.
So, the next time you hyperlink an external site, make sure you do it in the same window.
Tell me what you guys think. Do you prefer opening links in the same window or different window?

I was always opening it on a new window, but reading your point of view i think the best is to open on the same window. Its really annoying to have windows poping up on your screen.

I like my windows to open in new tabs, so I’ve set firefox up for that.
Especially with blog reading I want to finish reading the original article before I go off and look at something else.

I prefer to open new window. I like to open links in the articles in new window. And after I finish all the posts, then I will go to check out those links.

Thanks for the advice, I never though of it that way, but from now on I will definitely reconsider before putting the target=”_blank” tag in

In firefox, open a link in a new tab with ctrl + click. Opera and IE7 are shift + click.

Yes, stay with the same window, otherwise, people will get distracted and annoyed.

ProBlogger.net just had a poll and discussion about this. Although only by a small margin, more people preferred links to open in a new window:

I personally prefer opening in the same window as well. I have always used a new window when creating links to other sites.

I find it annoying when sites open in the same window. Maybe it’s just the way I browse. Something to think about though.

Keep in mind though that most average web surfers probably don’t even know about the right click option let alone even THINK about opening a site in a new window or keeping it where it is.
Making external links open in new windows works for the majority of readers as your site is still open for the reader to see.

Oh well… We are all on the same frequency.. Today, I just thought of posting new entries with my external links to open a new window!
I’m quite loss now… I have a site talking about a review of business (why, how, what) and hence quite a lot of external links… And I just thought of external windows today…
Well, sunny I guess you are right… I am going to give minimum links to the external sites (in respect with your previous post), and I am going to keep my link simple (no external window).

You are right. Opening new window without first notify our reader is disrespectful. Beside it will make more annoy them, you have a possibility to lose them.
