Rumsfield’s Resignation and Democrats’ victory over Congress

I am not a Democrat nor am I a Republican so, I am writing this post in an unbiased position.

In my opinon it seems as if the war in Iraq has weakened the Republican Party’s credibility and strength with the American people. While President Bush is in power we went through two wars, gas prices going up, and two key officials of the Bush administration stepping down; first it was Colin Powell and now Donald Rumsfield.

Rumsfield, one of the key architects of the War on Iraq, has stepped down and now president Bush is shaken.

The Democrats used the war in Iraq, with demoralized USA soldiers, and no progress with stability in Iraq, as a tool to swipe over the Republicans. Now, the Democrats are in power of Congress after a long time and we can expect alot of changes being made for future economic and political decisions.

Republicans out of the way and Democrats in Congress will only lead to higher taxations for large scale business owners. The taxation policies may not affect individuals; however, to business owners it can take alot out of their pockets in taxing them as high as 40% from their profits.

So, in the coming months let’s see what happens, let’s hope things turn out for the good.

You present a balanced view which itself is quite valuable and important. As Aristotle observed, the truth is somewhere in the middle, in the golden “mean.” That is why Republicans have been saying that the Democratic party looks like the Republican party, because the Democrats who won this election are more centrist than other wings of the party. The American electorate is in the middle, and it is this moderation which keeps the polity sustained.

Regarding Rumseld’s resignation, it is quite common for generals and high-ranking officials to be fired during war–Lincoln did not hesitate. It seems it would have been better for Rumsfeld to have gone before the election, because the American people had preliminary stated they wanted “change” and at least this would have been evidence that the President was responsive to the popular will.

It will be interesting. Divided government(the President and Congress of different parties) was been a commonplace in the 20th century, it seems that our separation of powers and checks and balances do work, but the question as you pose is whether Congress can stop the unproductive critical rhetoric and expend energy on balanced legislation.
