All Windows XP users know that after using the OS for a while their computer gets slower and slower even with a fast processor such as Intel Centrino and with alot of RAM. I got sick of the slow down of Windows XP so I tested what I can do to speed it up. I tried defragmenting and it helps a little but for the most part it’s the same. After a while I looked and saw the Windows XP’s bubbly graphics takes alot of power from the main CPU. So, with a a simple settings change, my computer runs significantly faster than before. I changed my display settings to the Windows Classic theme. For those who know what I’m talking about you don’t need to see the steps, but for those who don’t know, the steps below should help.

Steps

Windows XP 1. Go to your Desktop, where there are no icons and right-click. Choose Properties; the Display Properties dialougue box should come up.
Windows XP 2. On the Display Properties dialougue box choose the Themes tab on the top. In the Theme selection box choose Windows Classic. Then press OK. It should say Please Wait as your desktop theme is changing. Your Windows should look like Windows 2000 and previous versions.

Also, you should change your start menu settings so it’ll also look like the classic versions too. I’m not sure if this helped the speed or not, but you should still try it.

3. On the Desktop screen, place your mouse on middle of the taskbar, the bar on the bottom. Right-click on it, and then choose Properties. Windows XP
4. Choose the Start Menu tab on the top and then choose Classic Start menu selection. Then press OK. Windows XP

Now go to your your Desktop and right-click on it then choose Refresh. Restarting your computer should also help. You should see a significant increase in your PC’s speed after you apply the setting changes. For those who applied the changes please comment and please indicate if the setting changes worked for you or not.
