South Asians have a certain name that defines their identity, “des”. Des means land or country. For example, the South Asian country of Bangladesh’ Bangla-des-h means land of bengalis. Bengalis are a South Asian ethnic group.

Desi is the name that defines South Asians like Arabs define anyone who is a native Arabic speaker or Arabian resident or Hispanic, which defines anyone who is a native Spanish speaker.

Desis have become a resident in every part of the world; from Malaysia, Africa, Europe, to Canada. No matter where you go someone from India, Pakistan, or Bangladesh will be there.

Desis, Indians specifically, have placed themselves in the eye of the world with their “Bollywood” films and their cheap IT labor. In every industry in American, people know the India name.

From doctors, hollywood stars, hotel owners, to computer engineers desis are slowly spanning their reach in every industry in America.

One of the known desis in hollywood is Kal Penn, sometimes credited as Kalpen Modi (picture on the right). He starred in several comedy movies: American Desi(2001), Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle(2004), and Where’s the Party Yaar?(2003).

Desis, in generally speaking, are hard workers that do their best to raise their standard of living. They do their best to make sure their children gets a proper education so they can live a desent life.

I’m a Desi, from Bangladesh, and my father will spend and do whatever it takes so I can have all I need to get a descent education and have a promising future.

So, the next time you hear the word “desi” you’ll know who they are.
